Car Sharing Safety Tips
If possible arrange to meet the person before the day of your ride. Ask a friend to tag along and meet your fellow carpooler at a public place, for example: cafeteria, coffee shop...etc. Bring ID with you and similarly request the other party to do so as well. Carefully verify each other's ID and note down the details.
If you have any doubts, don't ride with them.
Don't tell them where you live, arrange to meet at a neutral spot. Large public parking lots are good meeting places - shopping malls etc. Please don't post your home address with your ad here!
Don't give them your home phone number.
If you are uncomfortable giving them your email address, set up a second address for this use only. (Gmail addresses, for example, are free and can be accessed from any computer with internet access)
Whether you have met them before or not, if you are uncomfortable about getting in the car when they pick you up, don't. (Perhaps you could tell them you have another ride.)
If you think someone is not a safe driver, find another ride.
If someone says or does anything inappropriate when you are travelling with them, let the administrator know. If they behave unlawfully you should report it to the police.
Let your family and friends know who are you going to carpool with.
We suggest that you exchange emergency contact numbers before traveling, and exchange any important medical information.
Why not ask everyone at your workplace to register with Car Share? You get to travel with people you know who are going your way AND save on transport costs! Less cars... more cash - and a cleaner planet all in one go.
